Gratitude After Sustenance

One of the teachings of Islam is to praise God after satisfying one’s hunger and thirst. The believer is taught to say words to the effect:

All praise is due to God who has provided me with food and drink, and who has made me one of the believers.This simple expression transforms an ordinary physical act into an act of worship.

Food and Water: A Lifelong Dependence

Human beings cannot survive without food and water. These necessities are required continuously throughout life. For this purpose, God has made perfect arrangements. Water has been provided in abundance on earth, and nourishment has been made available in forms that require minimal effort to obtain.This arrangement itself is a sign of divine mercy.

Awareness of Divine Provision

When a believer eats and drinks after hunger and thirst, he becomes deeply aware of God’s greatness. Had such provisions not been made, human life would have been marked by constant suffering. The experience of relief after nourishment awakens a natural sense of gratitude.

At that moment, the body itself seems to express acknowledgement, and the heart calls out in praise for God’s boundless generosity.

From Physical to Spiritual Nourishment

Receiving physical sustenance reminds the believer of a far greater blessing—spiritual nourishment. Through revelation, God has given humankind guidance, showing them how to live in accordance with His will and how to attain success in the eternal life to come.

Thus, physical nourishment becomes a gateway to deeper remembrance and reverence for God.

A Life of Continuous Praise

A believer’s life should be marked by constant praise—praise for physical sustenance and praise for spiritual guidance. God has provided both the means to sustain the body and the knowledge to nourish the soul.

Remembering God after eating and drinking is not merely a ritual; it is a reminder that every comfort, every relief, and every opportunity for guidance is a divine gift.
