Reflections on Surah al-Hajj (22:31)

The Quran reminds us: “Being true in devotion to Allah, not associating partners with Him. Whoever associates with Allah, it is as though he has fallen from the sky and the birds snatch him away or the wind carries him off to a distant place.” (22:31)

This powerful verse teaches us that a believer’s life must have one central axis—Allah. Just as the universe revolves in order around its Creator’s laws, so too must our hearts remain firmly centered on Him.

Lessons from the Universe

In contrast, Near-Earth Objects—asteroids and meteoroids—move without stable orbits. Their irregular paths cause disruption and even pose threats to our planet.

The difference between these two behaviors is striking. If our lives revolve around shirk (associating partners with God), we become like these wandering objects—directionless, unstable, and headed for destruction. But when we embrace tawheed (the Oneness of God), we resemble the celestial bodies—living with clarity, discipline, and purpose.

The Example of Prophet Ibrahim (A.S.)

Prophet Ibrahim, the father of prophets, looked deeply into the order of creation. His reflection on the stars, moon, and sun led him to reject idol worship and recognize the One True God. His devotion became the finest example for mankind—a model of how reflection on creation can lead to unshakable belief.

The Kabah: A Center for Humanity

The Kabah itself stands as a timeless symbol of devotion. It is like a divine voice, calling humanity back to God. Just as planets revolve around a fixed center, our lives must revolve around Allah alone. The Kabah gives direction to otherwise directionless lives, reminding us that without a center, there is only chaos.

The Universe as a Teacher

In reality, the entire universe proclaims tawheed. Everything, from the tiniest particle to the grandest galaxy, follows the laws of God. Only a few exceptions—like the wandering asteroids—stray from this order.

Man too was given honor above creation, entrusted with God’s gifts and blessings. Yet, many fail to recognize this grace. They take divine favors for granted, and in doing so, they dishonor themselves. Gratitude transforms a person; ingratitude diminishes him.

Realigning Our Lives

The verse in Surah Hajj is not only a warning—it is a call to action. It asks each of us: Is my life truly God-centered? If not, now is the time to realign and redirect towards Him. Just as the universe finds harmony in obeying its Creator, we too find peace and purpose when our hearts revolve around Allah alone.

When life becomes God-centered, everything else falls into place—discipline, meaning, and inner peace.
